Echinopsis spachiana (Trichocereus spachianus )

Family: Cactaceae
Synonym: Night blooming cactus , Queen of the Night, (Echinopsis spachianus )
Distrubution: Mexico

Echinopsis spachiana (Queen of the Night) is native to Argentina. This cactus species is now found in many parts of the world. Due to its semi-invasive nature it is often listed as an obnoxious weed.

Normally the cactus contains small amounts of the hallucinogenic drug mescaline. Mescaline is found in greater concentrations in the small cactus called Lophophora williamsii native to Texas and Mexico.

The plants flower a number of times during midsummer. The flowers open up early in the evening and last until noon the next day.
